A new insight from forensic and cybersecurity expert Dr. Richard Apau has sparked debate over Ghana’s SIM re-registration exercise. According to him, upgrading and making the existing SIM registration database fully usable would cost about GHC 48 million.
However, the proposed nationwide re-registration led by Sam George is expected to cost a much higher GHC 240 million. Dr. Apau points out that the GHC 192 million difference could instead be invested in creating sustainable jobs for nearly 7,000 young people.
The discussion raises important questions about cost efficiency and whether resources could be better used to support youth employment while still improving telecom security.
