President John Dramani Mahama has officially removed Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkonoo from office, acting in accordance with Article 146(9) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution. This major decision came after the President received a formal report from a committee set up under Article 146(6) to probe a petition lodged by Ghanaian citizen Mr. Daniel Ofori.
The investigative committee, after thorough deliberations, found sufficient grounds of stated misbehaviour under Article 146(1). Following its findings, the committee recommended the removal of Justice Torkonoo a recommendation President Mahama has now enforced.
This development marks a significant moment in Ghana’s judicial and political history, sparking wide public debate about judicial accountability, constitutional checks and balances, and executive authority.
👉 Reactions from the public, legal experts, and political analysts are already pouring in, with some viewing the move as a necessary step toward strengthening the integrity of Ghana’s judiciary, while others fear it may set a controversial precedent.
