Sam George Calls for Immediate Suspension of Courier Commission’s Crackdown on Delivery Riders

Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Sam Nartey George, has ordered the Postal and Courier Services Regulatory Commission (PCSRC) to immediately halt its ongoing enforcement exercise targeting delivery riders.

According to the MP, the sudden crackdown on motorbike delivery services is unfair and poses a direct threat to the thousands of young people who rely on courier work as their main source of livelihood. He stressed that instead of punishing riders, authorities should focus on creating supportive policies that help regulate and professionalize the sector without stifling employment.

Sam George emphasized that delivery riders have become an essential part of Ghana’s digital economy, especially with the growing demand for online shopping, food delivery, and on-demand services. “Rather than treating them as offenders, we should recognize their role in boosting small businesses and serving communities,” he said.

He further urged the Commission to engage key stakeholders—including rider unions, delivery companies, and digital platforms—to find a balanced solution that ensures safety, compliance, and job security.

Many Ghanaians have also taken to social media to express frustration over the enforcement exercise, warning that it could lead to higher costs for delivery services and loss of jobs for young people.

For now, Sam George’s directive is seen as a temporary relief for riders, but industry watchers believe long-term reforms are needed to create a fair system that both regulates courier services and supports Ghana’s fast-growing gig economy.
