It's a dark day for the New Lawn die-hards. Forest Green Rovers, football's green utopians, mathematically relegated from League One after a comprehensive 3-0 loss to Carlisle United. The green utopian dream is parked temporarily, but how did it all unravel so badly on the pitch? Here are the facts of a season that promised so much before they fell short in despair.
But the BBC said, Forest Green's destiny was confirmed at Brunton Park as a dominant Carlisle exposed their attacking weakness and back-four weakness. With an attacking line that has promise, the goals simply haven't been arriving consistently throughout this season.
Too many goals conceded all the way through the campaign. Carlisle brutally exposed this weakness.
While coming up with moments of magic, a common goalscorer couldn't be found, leaving the entire team under pressure.
Plenty of changes in the management this season naturally disturbed team and tactical consistency.
A bad home form has deterred the team's performance. But all is not doom and gloom. Forest Green's green stance is a ray of hope on the football pitch. Their vegan café, organic playing pitch, and plans for a carbon-neutral stadium are something that clubs and fans can only dream of. The BBC cottoned on to this passionate dedication and the pressure the chairman Dale Vince has been under to keep that commitment and it is great to see.
They've proved that football doesn't necessarily need to be just a sport, that it can be a force for good.
For me personally, I think the constant chopping and changing of managers actually harmed the team. It's hard to have a settled way of playing when you're constantly adapting to a new system.
Relegation is disappointing, I'm sure, but Forest Green Rovers need not hang their heads in shame. They have left their stamp upon the beautiful game, both on and off the pitch, in ways that will last an eternity. The test now is to rebuild, regroup, and return all the stronger in League Two.
