Burkina Faso security officials confirmed on April 21, 2025, that they had thwarted a grand coup plot to destabilize the nation. The operation, led by Minister of Security Mahamadou Sana, identified the plotters of the operation as operating in neighboring country Côte d'Ivoire, led by President Alassane Ouattara.
The coup, according to Minister Sana, was set to occur on the 16th of April, 2025, as a foreign enemies-sponsored attack on the Burkina Faso presidency. The attack was also to be preceded by concurrent massive terrorist attacks. The masterminds of the conspiracy were said to have contacted defectors of the Burkina Faso military, Commander Joanny Compaoré and Lieutenant Abdramane Barry, who defected to Abidjan.
The attempted coup was revealed through intercepted conversation between a Burkinabe military commander and terror bosses plotting defense and security officers' positions. The revelations told that there was a planned strategy to increase attacks on both civilians and security officers as part of an attempted coup to initiate rebellion against the existing government under Captain Ibrahim Traoré.
Following the attempt at the coup, a number of Burkinabe non-commissioned and military officers have been arrested, including the former commanding officer of the military justice battalion, Frédéric Ouedraogo, and Captain Elysée Tassembedo, commanding officer of the northern sector security forces unit. The Minister Sana called on the armed forces to be on high alert and has reassured citizens that the government is in a position to repel any threat in a firm way.

The Burkinabe government has accused Côte d'Ivoire of harboring suspects in the conspiracy plot and has formally requested the extradition of such suspects. Nevertheless, previous extradition requests for politicians and soldiers who were charged with conspiracy against Captain Traoré have been turned down by the Côte d'Ivoire government. These incidents have strained the two neighboring nations' relations even further.
The incident is the second coup bid reportedly launched in Burkina Faso following Captain Ibrahim Traoré's seizure of power in 2022. In 2024, the government announced the foiling of various destabilisation plans, one of them being the one allegedly led by deposed transitional president Lieutenant-Colonel Paul Henri Sandaogo Damiba. That such threats had persisted is an indication of the ongoing challenges being faced by the Burkinabe regime in establishing stability and security.
With both internal and external challenges facing Burkina Faso, the government remains committed to the protection of the country's sovereignty. The failure of this coup plot is an indication of the nation's security forces and its leaders' resolve and strength.
