In a recent turn of events, Kwame Asare Obeng, widely known as A Plus and the Member of Parliament for Gomoa Central, has publicly apologised to Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine following a series of controversial social media posts. A Plus clarified that a defamatory post on X (formerly Twitter), which labelled Dr. Ayine as “a thief” and “corrupt,” was the result of an impersonated account.
However, he admitted to authoring a separate Facebook post where he referred to Dr. Ayine as “an old fool” and a “stupid man,” acknowledging that the language used was inappropriate and unworthy of his position.
Impersonation and MisrepresentationA Plus explained that the offensive X post originated from a fraudulent account that mimicked his official profile, complete with his name, photograph, and a verification badge. He emphasised that this account was not under his control and was created to mislead the public. The impersonator falsely accused Dr. Ayine of corruption, a claim A Plus vehemently denied. He provided the link to the fake account for public awareness:
Acknowledgement and Apology
Despite the impersonation, A Plus acknowledged his own lapse in judgment regarding the Facebook post. He admitted to authoring the post, which contained derogatory remarks about Dr. Ayine, and expressed deep regret for his choice of words. As a younger colleague in Parliament, he recognised the importance of maintaining respect and decorum in public discourse. A Plus has since deleted the post and issued a formal apology to Dr. Ayine, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Parliament, and the general public.
Rebuilding Trust and Moving Forward
This incident highlights the challenges posed by digital impersonation and the rapid spread of misinformation on social media platforms. It also underscores the responsibility of public figures to exercise caution and professionalism in their online interactions. A Plus’s apology and subsequent actions demonstrate a commitment to rectifying the situation and restoring trust with his constituents and colleagues.
In conclusion, while the impersonation on X was beyond A Plus’s control, his own conduct on Facebook was a matter of personal accountability. His public apology and the steps taken to address the issue reflect a willingness to learn from the incident and uphold the standards expected of elected officials.
As the digital landscape continues to evolve, it is crucial for all individuals, especially those in positions of influence, to be vigilant against impersonation and to engage in online discourse with integrity and respect.
